What am I up to right now?

I'm working on biofuel cell research at Saint Louis University this summer, which means I get to use some seriously cool hardware like this scanning electron microscope! Don't let its dinosaur interface fool you, though; even though the only method of image transfer is a single 3.5" floppy disk drive, this machine is only twelve years old. I wonder what posessed those engineers to equip such a fine machine with such an outdated computer system...

Just for kicks, below is a sample picture taken with the SEM of hair from a person with Uncombable Hair Syndrome (Pilitrianguli et Canaliculi), which is evident by the abnormal longitudinal grooves (normal hair is almost perfectly round):
